There was an article in the Spring 2012 Heirloom Gardener magazine stating that homegrown food is better for you. Eating an apple today does not get you the same benefits as an apple years ago would give you. Personally I would like to see a study done on the nutrition differences of store bought veggie varieties vs heirloom. I think heirloom would win that one but who knows 🙂
Now there have been several news articles about the claimed benefits of organic food. The title of the first article I read on this subject stated organic food was not worth the cost strictly because the nutrition content was not significantly higher in organic food compared to other produce- according to one study from Stanford. While this study does make a person think about why you buy what you do, the organic community has been quick to point out there are several reasons to buy organic, a big one being pesticides. People simply do not want to be eating pesticides. and why should we? I mean all chemical and fertilizer bottles have ‘Do not Ingest’ warnings with a poison control number on them. Using a little deductive reasoning, I’d think its not unrealistic to say it’s not healthy to eat them on vegetables or out of the bottle. But out of everything this one says it best at the end….
The study’s real value may be getting people to think more seriously and critically about what they eat. At the same time, science needs to work harder to examine the long-range impacts of what this report didn’t say about mainstream farming practices, food additives and human diet. Those results will say more about the worth of organic and conventional food.
I think this issue has come at a perfect time. Right now in California Proposition 37 will be up for vote in Nov. This proposition is to label GMOs. YES please label them! Even though this is just for CA, it will help take us one step closer to having the same food choices as the rest of the world. Did you know most other countries wont accept GMO types of produce? The US is the largest exporter of wheat and Korea, the 5 largest importer, has said they will not accept any GMO wheat. So imagine if our wheat was to become a GMO plant….I shiver at the thought. This proposition, though, is not to stop GMOs from being grown, distributed, or produced. It is just requiring they be labeled, like any product being properly labeled by its producer. Then, like in any other business, consumers can and will show their opinion of that product by either buying it or not. Doesn’t that sound great!?
