Spring Seed Starting

Can you believe it’s already time to start seeds for this years garden!? I can’t. We’ve still had snow and cold, mixed in with a few days of really nice weather that gives us a taste of spring. This year to start my seeds I setup a grow tent in one of our out buildings that has the grow lights and a heat mat in it. Normally I start them in the basement, but we need that space for other things now. Luckily the grow tent has been working fine outside! So far I’ve got a mix of flowers, cabbage and broccoli plants that will be planted out in a couple weeks, and some summer plants that need more time to grow like tomatoes and peppers.

To start my seeds I’ve been using the AeroGarden seed starting tray. Once the seedlings pop-up I transplant them into bigger pots and put them in the grow tent. It has been working really well for me! And it’s easy to see what seeds have germinated and which haven’t. The sponges are about as tall as the pots I transplant them into so they are a little tricky to get completely covered in soil. If I see the roots are coming out the side of the sponge I might start breaking the sponge into a smaller size. If I don’t see the roots I won’t do that since I don’t want to risk breaking the roots. You can watch it all in the video below, and let me know in the comments how your garden plans are going so far!
