After much deliberation, we finally made the leap and bought 4 chicks yesterday. They are Barred Rock pullets, a popular breed for backyard chicken owners.

Here are a few quick facts we’ve learned from researching this breed around the web.
- Barred Rock is a variety of the Plymouth Rock breed.
- The hens should lay around 250 large, brown eggs a year, even in the winter, and will weigh around 6-7 lbs. They start laying around 20-25 weeks, but can start earlier.
- They will make noises, but usually do so quietly.
- They’re naturally curious and friendly, which I can say is definitely true even from just having them for a day.
Next up in this adventure is going to be to build a coop and run. Should be fun – I promise some pictures and details when we get it done 🙂 Until then, we are enjoying the start to our own chicken experience.
