Mother Nature is currently keeping everything covered in snow here so its the perfect time to do some indoor garden planning. Can you believe in just a few weeks it will be time to start planting seeds for the upcoming garden season?! With that in mind, today I’m sharing 3 tips to help you get ready for the spring garden season.
- Work on your garden education. This is an idea I got from the High Performance Garden Show and I love it! It is the perfect way to use the winter months – learn more! The show can be found at theLivingFarm.org. Lynn does a wonderful job showing how she plants, harvests, and cares for her raised bed garden. This is a great way to find some garden inspiration and learn a few new tricks to use in your own garden. You can also read over those seed and plant magazines or get those books you’ve been wanting to read off the shelf and read away! Something else to think about: how do you want to preserve or keep what you grow? Do you want to plant just enough to eat it all fresh, can some, freeze it, dehydrate? Figure out now how you want to keep what you grow.
- Draw out a planting diagram. Draw out a diagram of your garden space and decide where you want to plant everything. Where will the potatoes go, or broccoli, or lettuce, etc. Remember to rotate crops if you planted the same thing last year and make sure your tall plants will not be shading out smaller plants next to them (or use tall plants to make some shade!).
- Write down the seed varieties you will use. Once you decide where you want to plant the carrots, or how much space you have for carrots, decide which exact variety of carrot you’re going to use. This can be the hard part! If you’re like me you might have several different seed packets of carrots and want to plant them all! You should only plant what you have space for though. Now’s the time to pick which exact ones will get planted so you’re not trying to decide when it’s time to get seeds in the ground, or worse, realize you don’t have seeds for the varieties you want.
I love your blog. So much good information!! I really like that you are sharing the seeds you use and how they worked for you and that you try new things. I tend to go with what I know.
I’ll keep watching!
Thanks!
Thank you very much for the information
