Pre-New Year

Snow has finally fallen in our area, blanketing everything in a nice white wet powder. Yeah! We really need the moisture, and the plants are insulated from extreme cold by the snow. Mother Nature sure works in wondrous ways. But even with the snow we’re already starting to plan our garden, because….. we have our first seed magazines in! Yes, you can already start planning and ordering seeds. And if you are like us who want to start your own seedlings, you need to start planning and ordering now. We will probably start planting indoors around March, which isn’t very far away.

So, what do we have in the works. Well, we have a tote and paper to start a worm bin 🙂 We hope to have enough castings by the time spring comes to put some down when planting the seedlings.

Obviously since the seed catalogs are in we’re also picking some seeds. Most of what we want to plant though are heirloom plants, so we can save seeds. We actually already have several of the varieties we plan to use, but still find some interesting ones to try every once in a while.

As I said earlier, the new year brings in a feeling of starting anew. We’ve been thinking this year we will give cover crops a try, just to see how it works. We also know someone who is going to give aquaponics a try this year so look for updates on that as the year goes on.

That’s what our new year looks to have coming so far.
