Herbs

Happy New Year everyone! Now that we are a week into the new year, how are those resolutions coming? In the past I’ve tried to make new resolutions but by the end of the first week my motivation has definately fizzled down, and by the end of the month it’s gone. This year though I’m still feeling confident we can complete all of our goals. Why? Well, I’ve actually started working on them already!

herbs

Here they are – four herb plants I just bought from the grocery store of all places. These are chives, mint, parsley, and sage. The sage smells great, just looks a little spindly right now. I hope with a new pot and some TLC it will grow fuller.

So, for my benefit and yours here’s what these plants will need:

  • Parsley – likes a sunny location for 6-8 hrs but can tolerate some shade, well-drained soil. Becomes spindly indoors from lack of direct light. Harvest by cutting outside stocks at the ground to encourage growth all year long. Will go to seed next year and need to be replanted, or grown from seed.
  • Sage – warm sunny location but not extreme heat, well-drained soil. Harvest leaves lightly the first year. Needs to have direct sunlight and be trimmed to not become leggy.
  • Mint – likes full sun, moist, well-draine soil. Best in containers to keep it from spreading everywhere.
  • Chives – prefers full sun, well drained soil. Easy to grow perenial herb.

Thats about it for these herbs. I hope to add a few other varieties during the year to have a full herb garden, but am excited for what we already have. By having our own plants we hope to be able to dry and save our own herbs, which will give us fresh, ready-to-use herbs for recipes all year long. As an added bonus we won’t need to spend money on the expensive “fresh” sprigs from the store either.
