Soil Blocks and Garden Tour: Week 4

The garden has been growing for 4 weeks now! We are only a couple weeks away from our average last frost date and the plants are really starting to grow. Everything is looking greener. Over the last couple of weeks I’ve also been wanting to try starting seeds in soil blocks. I just bought a soil blocker that makes 5 little 1 3/8inch size soil blocks (I say it wrong in the video) but the weather has not been cooperating! Part of the success of growing in soil blocks is using a good soil mix, so I’m using a soil mix I found at The Seasonal Homestead blog. To make this mix you need to sift the peat moss and compost because you can’t make nice blocks if there are large chunks in the mix, but it’s been so windy I wasn’t able to get outside to do that until a few days ago. The blocks are quick to make once I got the soil to water ratio right and I can’t wait to see how my seeds do in them! I planted a lot of flower seeds right now. I’m not sure these blocks would be big enough to start bigger plants like squash and cucumbers in, but there are bigger block sizes available if I decide to start making more.
